I’m August the human, and Melly is my baby tortoise.
I brought Melly home in March 2025 when I was working as a remote crisis and referral coordinator, headset and all.
Melly kept me company as I answered crisis calls all day, talking people through their depression, anxiety, substance use, psychosis, and more. As someone with intense anxiety, answering crisis calls taught me that everyone is carrying something heavy. Slowing down and staying present with Melly turned the volume down on the loud anxiety that blared 24/7 like an alarm in my head.
Taking photos of my pet with miniatures felt silly at first. Maybe that’s because it is, and that’s okay. As I learned to slow down and find joy in everyday life, I began to let myself be curious and try new things despite my anxiety.
Eventually, I was able to leave my job to pursue remote work at a calmer pace. Now, Melly assists me as a freelance local SEO specialist. We also love to try new recipes, snacks, and restaurants in Georgia.
